The Last Cuentista is a book by Donna Barba Higuera. In this book, the main character, Petra, was Hispanic. So there were some Spanish words used in the book. Since Petra wanted to be a storyteller, one of the words used a lot was “cuento”, which means tale/story. That inspired us to make our own handmade books which included our own cuento, and our ideal world. I think it’s important to keep telling stories so that they can be passed on for generations.
In Language Arts, we had to create our ideal world. A summary of my ideal world is a place where there is no climate change, no racism or sexism, and the government is Representative Democracy. I liked creating my ideal world because it made me think of the world I want to live in.
A project that we just completed in Language Arts was book making. Our handmade books included our cuentos, and our ideal world stories. Making the book was really fun because a local artist named Peg Gignoux came to my Language Arts class to help us make the books. The first thing we did was create collages of things like leaves, flowers, and things you can find outside. The second thing we did was paint the covers of our books. The third thing we did was folding the books, and putting the collages in. After that, we added the covers. Lastly, we added in our cuentos and our ideal world story.
In conclusion, I’m glad we read The Last Cuentista because it led us to making our ideal world stories, and our cuento. Two projects that I really enjoyed.
